The Queen, shown here in a 2008 photo, is scheduled to tour Canada from June 28 to July 6 with her husband Prince Philip.(Canadian Press)The Queen's visit to Ottawa this summer could leave residents with a huge security tab since the federal government seems unwilling to pay, Ottawa police allege.
"We feel it's very unfair that taxpayers in this city will … be caught with the bill," said Deputy Chief Gilles Larochelle. "The Queen is not coming to visit the city … she's coming here to visit Canada."
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are scheduled to tour Canada from June 28 to July 6, spending Canada Day in Ottawa. They will also make stops in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Manitoba.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the federal government had not responded to requests for information about its approach to security costs for the visit.
Police say, however, that so far the federal government believes Ottawa police should pay for security. They estimated policing for the visit will cost an additional $3 million.
Larochelle said Ottawa police will be looking for reimbursement from the federal government and will also ask RCMP and Gatineau police for assistance during the royal visit.
